Cubaris murina Candy Mix
This woodlouse is intended more for ornamental purposes. They prefer tropical warmth. White rotten wood, beech and oak leaves are best suited for their habitat.
Ornamental woodlice consume springtails and woodlouse food, Achatina sticks, and various leaves.

Cubaris species, are among the most popular woodlouse species in the terrarium hobby. They are particularly popular due to their interesting behaviour, their beautiful colours and their ability to form a ball (“roll-up woodlice”).
Here is an overview of keeping Cubaris species:
🏡 Housing / Terrarium
- Size: from 5–10 litres volume for small groups (e.g. 10–20 animals)
- Substrate: loose, airy substrate – a mixture of the following is ideal:
- Deciduous forest humus, flake soil
- White rotten wood
- Leaves (e.g. beech, oak), magnolia leaves
- Some calcium (e.g. cuttlebone or calcium feed)
- Drainage layer recommended at the bottom to avoid waterlogging (Hydro-Drain, expanded clay or clay balls)
🌡️ Temperature & humidity
- Temperature: 24–28 °C optimal
- Humidity: high (approx. 80–90 %), but well ventilated
- Important: a wet-dry gradient in the terrarium, e.g. through a well moistened area on one side and a drier zone on the other
🌿 Setup
- Bark, moss, pieces of cork, leaves and hiding places (e.g. cork tubes)
- White rotten wood is particularly important – it is eaten and used as a retreat

- Main food:
- Leaves (brown, dried)
- Woodlouse food
- White rotten wood
- Additionally:
- Fish food flakes, Achatina sticks, vegetables (e.g. carrot, courgette – sparingly)
- Calcium source always provide (e.g. cuttlebone, calcium feed)
