Hogna maderiana is a fascinating wolf spider for experienced keepers. It impresses with its size, hunting behaviour and robustness, ideal for lovers of active species.

Origin: Madeira (Portugal)
Habitat: Rocky and sandy soils, often in dry, warm areas
Way of life: Ground dweller, nocturnal

General information

  • Body length: up to approx. 3 cm

  • Leg span: up to approx. 8 cm

  • Life expectancy: 2-3 years

  • Behaviour: calm, but very fast; not a group animal

  • Venom: not medically relevant, but bite can be painful


Terrarium

  • Size: at least 20 × 20 × 20 cm (single animal husbandry)

  • Substrate: diggable (e.g. coconut fibre humus, natural humus mixed with sand), at least 10 cm deep

  • Hiding places: Cork tubes, pieces of bark, stones

  • Temperature: 22-26 °C during the day, slightly cooler at night

  • Humidity: 60-70 %

  • Lighting: no special lighting required - crepuscular

  • Water: Shallow dish with fresh water

Important: Use an escape-proof terrarium as the animals are fast and agile.


Feeding

  • Food: crickets, crickets, cockroaches and other suitable insects

  • Young animals: 1-2× per week

  • Adult animals: approx. 1× per week

  • No feeding during moulting


Notes

  • For observation only - no handling recommended.

  • Do not keep in groups (can lead to cannibalism).

  • Quiet location without strong vibrations.

  • Escape protection is mandatory.
