This species of woodlouse from Greece grows to around 2 cm in size and can reach an astonishing age of several years. In the wild, they can survive dry periods with great heat - thanks to their ability to curl up completely - well protected under stones and roots until it rains again.

In addition to their expected age, another special feature of Armadillo officinalis is that they make noises. By stridulation - the rubbing together of 2 body parts - A. officinalis can make an audible "creaking" sound. As they can only make this sound when they are curled up, it is assumed that it serves to confuse potential predators and/or to warn conspecifics.
